Paley found his own handwriting difficult to read, as he once said to his son as they sat at the dining table, looking over his notebooks.

This is a typical sample of Paley’s hand - a fragment of a sermon preached, it seems, at Rose Castle, the residence of the Bishop of Carlisle, in 1783, and again in Carlisle, in 1791.
